1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 {The solid Petrov Defence a somewhat surprising opening for the many attacking players who use it.} 3. d3 {A rather quiet choice for White but one that has been played by Carlsen. but then so too has the much more popular moves} (3. Nxe5) ({and} 3. Nc3) 3... Nc6 4. Nbd2 {White heads for a Kings Indian Attack structure. However, as Black has developed sensibly and flexibly White seems to have fewer attacking chances than when Black plays a French (e6/d5) or Sicilian (c5 and d6 or e6) pawn structure in reply.} d5 5. c3 {Although played by Kasparov this seems an early commitment of the c-pawn and in the current game d3 ends up weak.} g6 6. g3 Bg7 7. Bg2 O-O 8. O-O b6 9. Re1 {Completing all the standard KIA moves but Black with careful opening play has not created any weak points.} Bb7 {Each side has chances after this continuation and the other game snippets quoted so it up to the skill of each player to naviigate the upcoming middle-game.} ({Other examples of play include} 9... dxe4 10. dxe4 Ba6 {Ferraro-Campitelli, Buenos Aires TB Superior 1998.}) (9... a5 10. Qc2 Bb7 {Shaposhnikov-Hort, Hoogeveen Essent op 2002.}) (9... Ba6 10. Qc2 Re8 {Burriel Ureta-Escoffier, ESP-ch U10 Salabrena 2021.}) 10. Qe2 {A typical KIA move which allows Nf1-h2 or e3 to be played whilst d3 is guarded.} ({other ways are} 10. b4 a6 11. Bb2 {was the highly rated non-game between Zvjaginsev-Inarkiev, RUS-ch rapid St.Petersburg 2015 now agreed drawn.}) (10. exd5 Nxd5 11. Nc4 Re8 12. Qb3 {Benjamin-Flear, Lone Pine op Statham Masters 1981.} ({or} 12. a4 {Pham-Karavade, Hanoi HD Bank op-A 2018.})) 10... d4 (10... Re8 {does not commit yet but doesn't aid Black's long term plan of f5.}) 11. Nf1 Re8 12. Bd2 a5 13. cxd4 Nxd4 14. Nxd4 Qxd4 15. Be3 (15. Bc3 {is preferable since after} Qd6 16. Ne3 (16. d4 {doesn't work here due to} exd4 17. e5 Bxg2 18. exd6 Rxe2 19. Rxe2 Bxf1 {and Black wins.}) 16... Rad8 17. f4 {gives play, for example, after} exf4 18. e5) 15... Qd6 16. b3 Ba6 17. Red1 Rad8 18. Rac1 c5 19. Rc3 h6 {Providing for the possibliity of Nh7-f8-e6 and d4. Another promising line of play was to increase the pressure on d3 by doubling rooks on the d-file.} 20. Qf3 Qe6 21. h3 Rd6 22. Nh2 Nd7 23. Ng4 Kh7 (23... h5 {is also playable since after} 24. Nh6+ Bxh6 ({not} 24... Kh7 25. Nxf7 $18) 25. Bxh6 Rd8 {followed by manouevring the knight to d4 is better for Black as White is unable to exploit the weak black squares around the Black king.}) 24. Bc1 Nb8 25. Ne3 Nc6 26. Nd5 Nd4 27. Qe3 Qd7 28. g4 {This doesnt stop Black's next move opening up the game} ({Little better was} 28. f4 Rxd5 29. exd5 exf4 30. Qxf4 (30. Qf2 fxg3 31. Qd2 Ne2+ 32. Kh1 Nxc3 $19) 30... Ne2+) 28... f5 {Suddenly White is in great difficulties as the support of the d5 knight is under threat as well as the White king's pawn cover.} 29. gxf5 (29. exf5 {is messy but Black comes out on top after} gxf5 (29... Rxd5 30. fxg6+ Kxg6 (30... Kh8 31. Bxd5 Qxd5 $19) 31. Be4+ Kf7 32. Bxd5+ Qxd5 $19) 30. Nxb6 Rxb6 31. Rxc5 fxg4 $19) 29... gxf5 30. exf5 Bb7 {Simpler than} (30... Rxd5 {as White can cause a few problems with} 31. f6) 31. f6 Bxd5 32. Bxd5 Rxd5 33. Qe4+ Kh8 (33... Qf5 34. Qxf5+ {is not so clear after} (34. Qxd5 {taking the rook is not forced and Black would win with} Ne2+ 35. Kh1 (35. Kf1 Nxc3 36. Qb7 Qxh3+ 37. Ke1 Qg4) 35... Qxh3#) 34... Nxf5 35. fxg7) 34. fxg7+ Qxg7+ 35. Kh1 (35. Kh2 {doesn't help White much following} Qf7 36. Be3 Rg8 {and the White king is fatally exposed.}) 35... Qd7 36. Kh2 Qf7 37. Be3 Rd6 38. f4 exf4 39. Qxf4 Nf3+ 40. Kg3 Rf6 41. Rc4 Rxf4 42. Rxf4 Qh5 {Cleverly saving the knight so now White has no hope.} 43. Bc1 (43. Rxf3 {only seems to hang but as the Rf3 is pinned against the Rd1 Black has} Rxe3 44. Rxe3 Qxd1 {winning.}) 43... Nd4 44. Rg4 Ne2+ (44... Ne2+ 45. Kh2 Nxc1 46. Rxc1 Re2+ {wins easily.}) 0-1
