Helpmates and Fairy Chess Problems Number 1.

Published in three parts in The Bournemouth Evening Echo (edited by R. Holmes) 28 May , 4 June and 11 June 1980.

Black to play and help-mate in two moves for each of the following situations.

(a) diagram

(b) diagram plus white bishop on f8.

(c) diagram plus white knight on e8.

Help-mates are one of a large group of chess problems called Fairies. In one way or another they do not conform to the rules of orthodox chess problems. In the present case the two sides, black and white, co-operate in mating black . Thus black moves first and each side has two moves in which to achieve the objective.
